WEST GREENWICH HOSTS ITS FIRST ECO-DEPOT

AND COMPUTER RECYCLING COLLECTION EVENT

Free for all Rhode Island residents

JOHNSTON, R.I. (June 5, 2009) – Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC), together with the Town of West Greenwich, will host an e-waste recycling and Eco-Depot collection on Saturday, June 20 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the West Greenwich Town Hall,  280 Victory Highway.  This is the first time the town has hosted a household hazardous waste and e-waste recycling collection with RIRRC.  The collections are free and all Rhode Island households are invited.

Eco-Depot is a popular program that offers Rhode Islanders the opportunity to dispose small amounts of household hazardous waste properly.  HHW can include poisons and chemicals such as cleaners, pool chemicals, oil-based paints, propane tanks, fluorescent light bulbs, pool chemicals, and fertilizers.  Because these items contain toxins that are harmful to humans, animals and the environment, special care is required to dispose of them safely.

Computers and televisions cannot be placed in the trash or recycled in R.I.’s curbside program.   Through RIRRC’s special program, unwanted and broken personal computer equipment and televisions can be recycled for free.  All types of household computers are eligible including CPUs, monitors, printers, keyboards, laptops, hard drives, scanners, modems, and mouse devices.

“We thank the Town of West Greenwich for inviting us to hold this special collection,” said Mike OConnell, executive director of RIRRC.  “We appreciate the fact that people have busy lives and that clean-out and disposal chores are not a favorite weekend activity.  By holding the collection in West Greenwich, we are shortening the drive time, and we hope that many people who live nearby will take advantage of this convenience.”

To reduce waiting time, appointments are necessary for Eco-Depot drop-offs.  Call 942-1430 x 241 or sign up online at www.rirrc.org and click on the Eco-Depot logo on the right-hand side of the page.  No appointment is necessary for e-waste recycling.

Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation is the quasi-state environmental agency dedicated to providing the public with environmentally sound programs and facilities to manage waste. The agency helps fund and promote the state’s recycling program, and owns and operates the Materials Recycling Facility and Central Landfill in Johnston.
